Soil and Rock Mechanics
Finite Element Analysis
Dr. Guil Protus, P.E. is a registered Professional Engineer with over 35 years of experience in
soil and rock mechanics modeling for dynamic loads. Dr. Protus is an expert in soil and rock
structural interaction having performed finite element analysis of concrete and steel structures
that interact with soil and rock to analyze how the entire system will perform under both static
and dynamic loading. He has recently modeled stress fields for a concrete lined tunnel, tieback
anchor interaction, combination cantilever H-pile, and mechanically stabilized earth support
structure and shotcrete lining of tunnels. He modeled the integrity of the Norton Mine in Ohio for
static and high pressure air loads, and prepared conceptual shaft plug designs.
